Timing
Mid-August to mid-September is the published ideal. By the first week of September you are already in the back half of it, and anything seeded much past mid-September in the GTA gets progressively riskier as soil temperature drops.
Sod has more room than seed but still needs weeks of root contact before hard frost, so a fall sod job wants to be down well before the ground closes.
Raise the summer cut height to 6 to 8 cm next year. Beetles prefer closely cropped lawns to lay eggs in, so mowing height is a real part of grub pressure the following autumn.

Salt. Kentucky bluegrass, which most GTA lawns are built from, shows damage at roughly 3 to 6 mmhos/cm of soluble salt, while fine fescue tolerates about 8 to 12. Overseeding that edge with fine fescue is a real change, and about a foot of water in spring leaches roughly 80 percent of accumulated salt where drainage allows.
Yes, until growth genuinely stops. Going into winter with long grass mats it under snow, and going in scalped exposes the crowns. The last cut wants to be close to the final cleanup so the lawn goes under snow clean.
