What the customer asked for

The bones of this front yard were good. Armour stone stacked against the grade, a curved interlock walk running to the door, a mature Japanese maple carrying the corner. What let it down was the turf between those elements, which had thinned to the point where the eye went to the bare patches instead of the stone.

Rebuilding a lawn around existing hard landscape is a different job from laying sod on an empty lot. Every edge is a place where the new turf either meets the stone cleanly or announces that someone rushed.

02 / How it was done

1. 01

   Protect what stays

   The maple's root zone and the armour stone set the working limits before anything came out. On an established front yard, the constraints are the plan.

2. 02

   Strip and prepare the base

   Old turf off, grade corrected to run water away from the walk rather than across it, and the base worked so new roots have somewhere to go.

3. 03

   Cut sod to the curve, not to the roll

   The walkway curves, so the sod was cut to follow it. Straight-cut sod against a curved edge leaves a row of triangular gaps that never fully knit.

4. 04

   Finish the bed lines

   Fresh edges and mulch where the beds meet the new turf, so the whole front reads as one piece of work rather than a lawn job with old beds beside it.

03 / What changed

• Continuous turf running clean to the stone and the walkway, with no gapped seams along the curve.
• Water runs off the walk instead of across it, which is what keeps the joints from going green.
• The armour stone and the maple are what you notice now, which is how it should have read from the start.
