Property care in Hogg's Hollow
Hogg's Hollow sits on the valley floor of the west branch of the upper Don. It has no sidewalks anywhere, its streets are winding crescents and private cul-de-sacs, and many homes are still prone to moisture and flooding from the water table. Every one of those facts changes how property work has to be done.

The housing
Subdivided from the 1920s and completed in the 1960s, which is why the architecture is a mixture of English Cottage, Tudor, Colonial, Georgian and Modernist. Original mid-century houses are increasingly being replaced by larger builds.
The canopy
Maple, birch, pine, spruce and willow line the streets, described locally as a colour guard.
Winter here
No sidewalks means no municipal sidewalk-clearing obligation, but it also means no shoulder to stack snow on, and pushing it into the roadway is still an offence. On a valley floor with winding private access, snow storage has to be planned property by property.

The water table is a documented local problem
The valley was full of quicksand, swamps and bogs before settlement, was inundated by Hurricane Hazel in October 1954, and many homes here still take on moisture from the water table. Grading, drainage and sod work carry real failure risk if that is ignored.
Ravine rules apply to grade, not just to trees
Changing the natural topography by excavating or adding soil is itself an offence in a designated area without a permit, as is placing five cubic metres of fill or replacing a retaining wall.
Access limits the equipment, which limits the method
Winding cul-de-sacs and private drives mean some work that would be done by machine elsewhere gets done by hand here. That is a scheduling and pricing reality worth knowing before the quote.
The rules that actually apply

Hogg's Hollow is in the City of Toronto. The thresholds below are that city's, and they are not the same as the city on the other side of the boundary.
A permit is needed to injure, destroy or remove any private tree 30 cm in diameter or more, measured 1.4 m above ground. Injury includes failing to protect a tree properly during work, so root-zone compaction and regrading count. Penalties run from $500 to $100,000 per tree.
Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 813, Article IIITurfgrass must be cut once growth passes 20 cm. The same by-law requires properties to be kept clear of prohibited plants, and the named list is exactly what colonises a ravine edge: dog-strangling vine, garlic mustard, common and glossy buckthorn, Japanese knotweed, phragmites, giant hogweed, purple loosestrife, poison ivy and ragweed.
Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 489No owner or occupant may move snow or ice from private property onto a road, sidewalk or laneway. Sidewalks adjoining the property must be cleared within 12 hours of snowfall ending, and driveways, steps, walks and landings within 24 hours.
Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 719The City mechanically clears the large majority of public sidewalks once accumulation reaches 2 cm. Below that threshold the 12-hour clearing duty sits with the owner.
Soft landscaping on the City boulevard needs no permit, but boulevard trees are City property and are protected at any size.

The valley floor means the ravine by-law should be assumed to apply, along with likely TRCA regulation as a valley and stream corridor. Treat any tree, grade or hardscape work as a permit conversation first.
