Redo the sod in that area and give us a garden makeover.

What the customer asked for

The front corner where the walkway meets the driveway is the highest-traffic sightline on any property. It is what you see from the car, from the sidewalk and from the front step. On this one it had been taken over by a low spreading perennial that had crossed the concrete edge on both sides.

Behind it the plants were fine. A purple barberry carrying good colour, a couple of established shrubs, hostas along the wall. Nothing needed replacing. What had gone was the line between the bed and everything else, and with it any sense that someone was maintaining the front of the house.

02 / How it was done

1. 01

   Take out the spreader, keep the structure

   The groundcover came out. The barberry, the shrubs and the hostas stayed. Clearing a bed is a decision about what earned its place, not a decision to start over.

2. 02

   Re-cut the bed to a curve that suits the concrete

   The walkway and driveway meet at an angle here, so a straight bed line fights the hardscape. The new edge follows the sweep of the concrete instead of arguing with it.

3. 03

   Place stone with restraint

   A few fieldstone boulders set into the bed rather than lined up along it, so they read as part of the ground rather than as a border someone installed.

4. 04

   Dark mulch to a proper depth

   Full coverage, pulled back off the stems, deep enough to actually suppress the regrowth rather than just colour the surface for a month.

03 / What changed

• The walkway and driveway edges are visible along their full length again.
• The barberry now reads as the feature of the corner, which is what it was always meant to be.
• The curve carries the eye from the driveway to the front door instead of stopping it at a mess of greenery.
