01 / What was there

What the customer asked for

The bed ran the length of a cedar hedge along the side of the drive, and it had quietly stopped being a bed. Volunteer growth had filled the gaps between the cedars, a shrub had thrown long unpruned canes out over the interlock, and the soil line had crept into the lawn until there was no edge left to read.

Nothing here was failing. That is the point worth making. The cedars were healthy, the interlock was sound, and the shrub was alive. The property looked neglected because the lines had gone soft, not because anything needed replacing.

02 / How it was done

1. 01

   Clear what does not belong

   Volunteer growth and weeds out of the cedar bases first, so the actual planting could be seen before any decisions got made about it.

2. 02

   Prune back to structure, not to size

   The shrub was cut back to its own framework rather than sheared to a shape. Shearing gives you a tidy week and a worse plant. Pruning to structure gives the plant somewhere to go.

3. 03

   Cut a real edge

   A defined spade edge between bed and interlock. This is the single line that does the most work on a property like this, and it is the one most often skipped.

4. 04

   Mulch to depth, off the stems

   Dark mulch across the full bed, held back from the cedar trunks. Mulch piled against a stem holds moisture where the plant does not want it.

03 / What changed

• The bed reads as a deliberate line again from the top of the driveway, which is where anyone arriving actually sees it from.
• The interlock edge is visible along its whole run instead of disappearing into soil halfway down.
• The cedars have a clean base, which means the next cut and the next cleanup both take less time.
