Please help us clear this snow, it's far too much for us. We called you because we heard you do very good, clean, fast work.

What the customer asked for

This is what most residential driveways actually look like partway through a Toronto winter. Not deep fresh powder, but packed and rutted snow that has been driven over, partly melted and refrozen, with footprints set into it like concrete.

That surface is the one that puts people on the ground. Fresh snow is easy to walk on. A refrozen rut is not, and no amount of clearing the top layer fixes it.

02 / How it was done

1. 01

   Clear to the surface, not to a level

   The pack came off down to the pavement. Leaving a compacted base is how a driveway becomes an ice rink on the next thaw and freeze.

2. 02

   Open the walkway and the entrance

   The path to the door and the step landings get cleared as their own task, not as spillover from the driveway. That is the route people actually use.

3. 03

   Stack the snow on the property

   Banks placed where they will not block sight lines out of the driveway and will not slump back across the cleared surface as they melt. Pushing snow to the road is an offence in Toronto, and it is also just someone else's problem.

4. 04

   Treat what has been cleared

   Cleared surfaces get material on them. Under Toronto's by-law that is an obligation on the owner, not a courtesy, and it is the step that decides whether the clearing holds overnight.

03 / What changed

• A driveway cleared to the pavement across its full width, including the apron where the plow ridge lands.
• A walkway and entrance that can be used in ordinary shoes.
• Snow banked where it will not run back across the driveway during the next thaw.
